By Frank King

Sometimes we refer to Christians as believers or disciples. Some Christians may even use the terms interchangeably. In this post, I want to address the question, what is a disciple? In doing so, it should become abundantly clear that these two terms--believer and disciple--are not the same.

In simplest terms, a disciple denotes one who follows a teacher. For instance, Jesus was, among other things, a great teacher. He had twelve men who followed Him wherever He went. This they did to the intent that they might learn of Him and that they might experience the kind of fellowship He enjoyed with the heavenly Father. Based on the aforementioned definition of a disciple, these twelve men were Jesus' disciples, and they were thusly referred to throughout the records of the gospel.

Because this was the relationship these twelve men had with Christ, He was proactive in teaching them. In the book of Matthew, chapter 17, for instance, a man brought his son who was possessed with a demon and asked Jesus' disciples to help his son. Because earlier Jesus had given His disciples power to cast out demons, He was displeased that they failed to deliver the man's son. "O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you?" Jesus said to His disciples (Matthew 17:17, KJV).

Note the words above, "how long shall I be with you." The point is that Jesus knew He would not be with His disciples forever. He was on earth for just a season and afterward He would return to heaven to His Father. At times, He was not pleased with the progress of these twelve men whom He referred to as His disciples.

One day, Jesus was speaking to some Jews, and as He spoke some of those Jews believed on Him. "Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed" (John 8:31, KJV). So from this passage, we conclude that a disciple of Christ is a person who after becoming a believer, continues in the teachings of the Lord.

You might say that to become a believer is the means but to become a disciple is the end. It is good when a person repents of his sins and places His trust in what Christ did on the cross. All of heaven rejoices when that occurs. But God's ultimate will is for each man and each woman to become a disciple of the teachings of His Son Jesus Christ. Hence, in the Great Commission, we are commanded, "Go and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19, NIV).

Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased." – Luke 3: 21-22 –
Jesus lived a sinless life. So why did He allow Himself to be baptized by John the Baptist? After all, this baptism was for sinners. Why, then, did Jesus do it?
He did it because he is both God and human. Jesus underwent baptism and even death as only a human could. He lived a perfect life completely free of sin and rose from the dead as only God could. The baptism by John in the Jordan River was another step in His identification with us – people born into sin. The arrival of the Holy Spirit in bodily form like a dove and the Abba Father’s proud voice expresses His support of Jesus’ every action in life, including this baptism, and it certainly signifies God’s approval and complete satisfaction with His only Son.
Now Jesus would officially begin his ministry as God's beloved Son walking the dusty roads of Israel. When you are hurting, depressed, broken, remember: You have a Savior who understands your humanity. When you sin, remember: Jesus has paid the price for your disobedience.
God loves you – more than you know, which is why He gave His best for you!

Notice that they -- Jesus’ disciples -- went out and preached everywhere, no boundaries. All the while, the Lord worked with them, as He said He would, being with us always until the end of the age. The Lord confirmed the Word by the signs that followed. They knew they were doing the Lord’s work because the Lord was with them. They not only felt His presence, they witnessed it. They prospered.

Mark's entire Gospel emphasizes Christ's power as well as his servanthood. I hear so much today from zealous Christians and from mission-oriented churches about “taking over the world.” I hear them say they are going to “change the world,” as if they are going to set up rule.

“What are we going today, Brain?”
“The same thing we do every night, Pinky. We’re going to take over the world.”

NARF! That's inevitably what Pinky would say, as if to state she (or it) was completely lost, confused. Running around pointlessly, feeling like she lacked in her purpose. Brain's self-centered, power-grasping attempts inevitably failed every episode, every night. Maybe it was because Brain chose to work at night, according to His own warped missions and desires, in the dark without the presence of the light.

Sorry for the momentary lapse into cartoon land, but such is the comedy to me of some enthusiastic vibes we send out when we lose focus and become self-absorbed and over zealous. Honestly, I don’t see any Pinky and the Brain in Jesus’ Gospel.

Jesus' life and teaching does turn the world upside down. The world sees power as a way to gain control over others. But Jesus, with all authority and power in heaven and earth, chose to serve others. He held children in his arms, healed the sick, washed the disciples' feet, and died for the sins of the world. Following Jesus means receiving this same power to serve. As believers, we are called to be servants of Christ. As Christ served, so we are to serve.

Lord, today and everyday, give us the strength, the power, the courage and the love to go out and preach your Word everywhere. Let us receive in our hearts your power to serve so that we can serve others and be about your work, demonstrating God’s love. I pray these things in your name, Jesus. Amen.

We all have a history of mistakes in our life. But God has forgiven you if you have accepted His Son Jesus Christ as Lord.

"I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance," Jesus tells us in Luke.

A lot of "Christians" will tell you that your accepting and knowing Jesus as Lord is not the only way for God's forgiveness to be realized in your life.

This is simply not what Jesus said.

Jesus said you must believe in Him and know that He and He alone covers us in His righteousness.

He and He alone is righteous. So, you can only be saved when you decide in your to heart answer His call to Him, for His Lordship, for His righteousness. He is the Truth, the Way, and the Life. There is none other.

Yes, we need to forgive others as God has forgiven us. When we hold things against others, we are failing to realize what God has done for us by forgiving us if we are saved and believing in Jesus Christ as the only Master of our will.

If I tell a righteous person that they will surely live, but then they trust in their (own) righteousness and do evil, none of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered; they will die for the evil they have done. Ezekiel 33:13

I pray that you will lift the spirits of every person praying this prayer; that they will experience your joy and feel the warmth of your presence.

Father, thank you for the gift of salvation through Jesus and the comfort of the Holy Spirit you sent to seal and guide us.

Thank you for your Word, the Word who is the true Light... "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth" (John 1:1-14).

Thank you for who you are and all you do. Merry Christmas, Father. I love you!

Amen.

May God bless you and may you not only believe in Jesus, but I pray that you may know Him, and grow deeper in your knowledge of him, that your life become all about Him and that your fellowship with Him become all the more intimate and real. He loves you with a love so real and so true we cannot fathom! Every second with Him is truth!

Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.- 2 Corinthians 4:16

So much is made of the Spiritual and the spiritual world that often the physical nature of God, who is a Spirit, is often glossed over.

Wait a minute -- or wait a "cotton-picking minute," as my dear Paw Paw Larkin used to say. If God is a Spirit, what, then, is this about God having a physical nature, anyway?

By the way, a cotton-picking minute was an arduous minute spent very carefully and as efficiently as possible removing the cotton itself from the cotton boll and then placing the cotton in a bag you were toting behind you in the field. You had to pay attention to what you were picking and how you were doing it. So, again, if you have a cotton-picking minute, I want you to do something.

TODD HORNE

Find the nearest mirror. Go stand in front of it for a few minutes and simply stare into it. Stare at yourself, at your image in that mirror. Believe it or not, you are looking at the physical nature of God in that mirror.

The physical nature of God is man.

The word nature is derived from the Latin word natura, or "essential qualities, innate disposition", and in ancient times, literally meant "birth".[1] Natura was a Latin translation of the Greek word physis (φύσις), which originally related to the intrinsic characteristics that plants, animals, and other features of the world develop of their own accord.

God created man perfect and in His own image. God, a Spirit, created man as a physical being. Man was, therefore, created by God as a physical being in His own image. I believe this. I believe, just like the Bible tells us, that God created man a perfect being, forming him with his own hands from the dust of the earth, and that the Lord Himself literally breathed life into this vessel of clay He had formed. For me it is most literally an inspiring thought to know that God breathed His Spirit into a physical being He created in His own image -- me.

God's very spirit was and is residing inside my physical body, and inside your physical body, too. We each have in us God's innate disposition and his essential qualities.

My seventh-grade biology teacher, Mrs. Patterson, used to have a saying. Over and over again, she would make us say it. It ended with "because God don't make no junk." The focus of the thought was obviously that we are worth something because God made us. And, of course, that is true. But knowing that God made us IN HIS IMAGE, FILLED WITH HIS SPIRIT, and that we are like God innately and essentially takes it to a completely different and higher level.

Paul is pointing out to us in 2 Corinthians 4:16 our intrinsic and God-like value. This is the reality of who we are and the importance of life, which is everlasting -- not just in the spiritual sense, but also in the physical. So, no matter how deceptively decrepit our life becomes, even unto the point of death, we are being constantly renewed from the inside out. That's the heart of hope.

Editor's Note: My only sister, the third of three children and the "baby" of our family, died suddenly and unexpectedly in late July. She was 38. She was not sick, not that we knew. One moment she was alive. The next moment she was gone. A parent losing a child -- at any age and under any circumstance -- has to be the most devastating, most painful experience imaginable. Losing one's child cuts so searingly deep that I cannot bear the thought of such, even after watching up close and holding near, attempting to console and begging to calm my parents as they lived through the wrenching realization that their daughter had gone, passed on, before them. Dimensions to a person's sadness and grief only expand when you are forced to live them. It is a stark contrast -- living in and through something rather than simply sensing it or even empathizing with it. Still, as we look on, awkwardly askance or eschew even toward those we love most when tragedy strikes them for we sense innately within ourselves an abiding fear rooted in self-preservation that speaks in monotones simply, "I really don't want to go there," we can't help but observe a strength and a power that is foreign to our nature. Of unknown origins, it emanates from inside, from inside. It moves in you, through you and around you It moves about you, overtaking and becoming pervasive. Yet, to call it you is simply not true. Death reminds us we are not alone. The death of your child, all the more so.

My mother, God bless her, knows this. And, God, as you can see from her profound expression below, has blessed her with a peace that surpasses all understanding; yet one that can only be definitively requited and fulfilled by God himself and His abiding love, which makes all things new. See now if you agree.

By JUDY HORNE

She came. She saw. She left - unrealized dreams wrapped in palm leaves waiting to be harvested. Dreams that could have grown bigger than life. Could have. Should have. She left, and her dreams left. That is why there are tears on earth.

You have moved on to a higher place, to hob-nob with the angels.

God often brings the most lasting and wonderful things out of the darkest moments in our lives. Sometimes, death preaches the gospel more powerfully than life ever could. Every time someone dies, it reminds those watching that God's work is not yet complete. For He must reign until he has put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. The one who weeps with me - His death was a cry and His resurrection is a promise.

God approves of my tears and welcomes me to look at death through the eyes of Christ. The comfort He provides does not remove my grief but it holds a promise that one day he'll take me to a place where I'll never cry again. Faith in God should never silence you in the dark hours of grief; rather, that is when we begin to understand how deep, rich and sturdy God's love really is. He will not turn away from questions or be surprised by the grief, or repulsed by anger or turn his back on my pain. He understands the darkest moments of human existence and enters them with boundless mercy, unending love and amazing grace.

Sometimes grief is so painful that it feels like you died also. But you live on because God has chosen for you to do so. There is a meaning and purpose still ahead. Your soul needs to be fed, your heart needs to be encouraged. The story that began in an eternity without death will end the same way. You grieve with one eye on your loss and one eye on the future. Pain is colored by hope. Leave room in your tears for little quiet moments of celebration. My child has gone to heaven, Lord, hear my humble plea: Until I get there, take care of her for me. You see, I've been doing that since you placed her in my arms and gladdened me with all her lovely charms. Now, on your arms she is leaning - and that gives love, hope, and faith such a deeper meaning.

(Oh God), please tell her when I get to heaven I'll be searching in the crowd, and when I see her lovely eyes, my heart will cry out loud. Then Lord, you will place her hand in mine and the peace that only you can give - at last I will find.

There are many enemies of Christ and His Church and we who call Jesus Lord are in a state of war. Battles are joined, prisoners taken and prisoners set free. Some battles are grand in scale and envelope whole geographical regions, others are like community guerilla warfare and others like personal hand-to-hand combat. All Christians will fight in these battles until the Final Battle is won.

So, like any good warrior, we must know our enemies, anticipate their tactics and be on the offensive. Most of them, if not all, are subsumed under three familiar concepts: the world, the flesh and the Devil. Though separate ideas, they are in fact related to each other and co-dependent. They share a common goal of destroying God's creation overlooking nothing that bears the imprint of God.

Because the entirety of creation is the target, consider first the idea of the 'world'. This word in the Bible is translated from the Greek term kosmos and has a twofold meaning. It refers to the planet we are on and the universe in which it's placed and, more importantly, it refers to that which is under the dominion of hostile spiritual forces following the leadership of Satan. In short, the battles we fight are not against the natural realm, but the supernatural (Eph 6:12). The immediacy of sense perception often deceives us into thinking the enemy is what we see in front of us, usually another human being, a group of one kind or another (think politics or religion) or even whole nations. The fact is the real enemy can't be seen as a soldier can see his opponent because it is a spiritual warfare. Forgetting this, or not taking it seriously, is to risk defeat. We can be very confident of victory, however, because our Champion has already overcome the world (John 16:33). He has provided us with weapons appropriate for spiritual warfare (Eph 6:13-17) and we have the power of the Spirit's indwelling which is "greater than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

An obvious but sometimes overlooked truth is that effective warfare requires that we not fraternize with the enemy. James in his intensely practical letter says that being "friends with the world is to be the enemy of God" (James 4:4). John adds to this by telling us to "not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of eyes, and the pride of life-is not of the Father but is of the world (1 John 2:15-16). The sobering part of this imperative is the word for 'love' that John uses. It is from the Greek word agape, which is precisely the love we are to give to God and our brothers and sisters in Christ. Thus, the point of these two writers is that being friendly with the world and loving the world is tantamount to not loving God and far worse, being the enemy of God.

Given all this, is there such a thing as a 'worldly' Christian and, if so, what characteristics might they have? Referring again to 1 John 2:15-16 we can say that at least the possibility of being a worldly Christian exists since he tells his readers, who are Christians, to "not love the world" and we get some clues as to what they might be like should they be caught in this trap. In the broadest of strokes, a worldly Christian is someone who has bought into the culture and morality of secular, ungodly society. They start out with fervent faith and commitment to the Lord but like those seeds that are choked off by the thorns (cares of this world and deceitfulness of riches) they eventually became unfruitful (Matt 13:22) and hardly distinguishable from unbelievers.

More specifically, loving the "things in the world" refers to giving oneself over to what the world produces, considers valuable and what it generates as the latest fad, whether in fashion or attitude. In every instance these things, whatever they might be, appeal to lust and pride in the form of desiring what is forbidden (lust of the flesh), seeking after and focusing on anything other than God (lust of the eyes) or narcissistic self exaltation, self-righteousness and disobedience (the pride of life). Embracing these three elements is to repeat what brought about the fall of humanity in the first place; they were effective then and remain so today.

Therefore, a favorite tactic of the Enemy is getting us to think the world provides for us, that our jobs, our businesses, our finances, our food, our shelter depend on it and therefore we had better pay attention to it lest we lose our livelihood. But just the opposite is true; we don't have to depend on the world for anything. Jesus said we are in the world but not of the world (John 17:14-16). He said He would take care of us Himself (Phil 4:19) and never leave us nor forsake us (Heb 13:5, Matt 28:20). After all, it would be cruel of Him to tell us to have no allegiances to the world, resist its temptations, and then abandon us to our own devices. So the Bible is filled with promise after promise that God will take care of us so that we owe the world nothing. Knowing this gives us confidence to overcome the world and walk in the freedom of serving Jesus.

By TODD HORNE

Have you ever gone to a play or a ball game and had an usher come up to you and ask if you knew where you were seated?

It happens to me all of the time. I always have to look down at my ticket to remind myself, then I usually ask the usher to either show me the way or give me directions.

I never seem to recall what seat I am in or where it is located.

This morning I was reading Ephesians on my brand new iPOD Touch (a Father's Day gift from my beautiful daughter and my beautiful wife - I begged to receive it early. Practical reasons, of course. I am such a kid, sometimes.) Back on point. So I am reading Ephesians, and the Holy Spirit approaches me as I was entering His theater and asks me if I know where I am seated?

He quickly reminded me. Why do I always forget?

It is such a glorious and costly seat. But the truth is I didn't spend a dime for it. God graciously extended to me an invitation a long, long time ago. He kept calling me and calling me to see if I was going to take Him up on his offer. He was always standing at my door. Finally, I invited Him in. He wanted to dine with me. We did. He told me about my seats, then. I was elated to no end.

Why I keep forgetting where those seats are, I don't know.

They happen to be the best seats in the house.

You see, together, you and I are seated in heavenly places in Christ, who has conquered all things -- including death and evil. Right now, as you read this, we believers are seated in Christ at the right hand of God the Father and everything is completely under His subjection.

Think about that for a minute. That's what Ephesians tells us.

God raised me and you up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

Remember this the next time (and there will be a next time) you are tempted by sin or when evil in the voice of reason, or fear, or guilt, or logic, or some other deceptive garb it puts on tries to hang something on you.

You are seated in heavenly places in Christ at the right hand of God Almighty. Right now! Not next week, or in some "afterlife."

You are victorious over Satan right now! You do not have to fight him, Jesus already did that. Use the Word you are in to tell him you know he is defeated and tell him who you are and where you reside, where you are seated. You have the power to withstand him and resist him, and according to the Scriptures he has to flee. He has no authority over you unless you give him place. Read in Ephesians 4 how to avoid giving the devil any room or a foothold in your life.

The choice is yours, not his!

By STEPHEN STILLMAN

Before we begin to think about spiritual formation, we must all realize that each of us have a spirit within us. God made us in His image and in doing so provided us with a spirit. That spirit within each of us has been formed and possesses a specific character. Our spirit can be pure and Godly, or it can be mean and evil. The character of our spirit has been formed from the experiences and choices we have lived through. Our life and how we interact in the world now and in the future, is entirely a simple result of what we have become in the depths of our being; in our spirit, will, or heart. This spirit within us is what drives and organizes our lives. In other words, we "live" from our hearts.

Realizing that our heart is what drives us and operates as our "control center", we must understand that it is vitally important to keep the heart in the right condition. In Proverbs 4:23 the wise Solomon tells us to, "watch over (keep) your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the issues of life." Since it is our heart that drives us and from it flows the issues of our life, it is correct to say that the choices we make create our own personal troubles and disasters. A carefully cultivated and maintained heart, assisted by God's wonderful grace, will foresee or transform most of the painful situations that enter our lives. We must therefore see that the greatest need we have both individually and collectively is the renewal of our heart.

We begin developing the character of our spirit, our spiritual dimension, from choices and actions in a world separated from God. Scripture tells us that all of us have been born into sin; therefore, the only hope for humanity lies in the fact that just as our spiritual dimension has been formed, it can also be transformed. The greatest question then becomes, what in our spirit needs to be changed and how can this change be brought about? The answer to these two points can be found in the relevance of Jesus Christ to human life.

Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus came to earth, gathered His small group of friends and disciples, trained them and then sent them out to "teach all nations". Jesus' purpose was to bring all human life under the direction of His wisdom, goodness, and power. In sending out His disciples he began a perpetual world revolution. This revolution is still in process and will continue until God's will is done on earth. As this revolution culminates, the forces of evil will be defeated and the grace of God will be seen, accepted, and joyfully conformed to every aspect of human life. This revolution is a continuous revolution of "the human heart". Jesus' revolution is a revolution of the character of the human spirit by changing people from the inside through an ongoing relationship with Jesus. It is a revolution that changes a person's beliefs, ideas, feelings, habits, and social relations. It is a revolution that penetrates to the deepest part of the human spirit.

Through the presence of Jesus' kingdom, we find the answers to the deepest needs of human personality for righteousness, provision, and purpose. If we set Jesus aside, we face the questions of what makes our lives go as they do?, and what could make them go as they should? Inability to find the answers to these questions leaves a person at the mercy of whatever forces and ideas come upon them. This basically is the human experience, which can be seen day by day all around us. Thoughtful people through the years have attempted to answer these questions and have found that what matters most for how life goes and should go for us is what we are on the "inside". This "inside" is the arena of "spiritual formation" and later "transformation". Inside us are our thoughts, feeling, and intentions along with their deepest sources. What is in our "heart" matters more than anything else for who we are as a person, and what becomes of us (what makes our lives go as they do?).

The author Oscar Wilde once remarked that by the age of forty everyone has the face they deserve. This statement is truly a profound and painful truth. It applies to the "spirit within us" that is expressed by the face. Right on the observable surface of our "spirit within" lie some of our thoughts, feeling, and intentions. These are the ones we are aware of, and are fairly obvious to others as well. These surface aspects are also a good indication of the general nature of the "spiritual depth" within. But these aspects we become aware of are only a small part of the spiritual aspects that are hidden deep within us. The hidden character of our spirit is not visible to others. It is also not fully grasped by ourselves. Only God knows our spiritual depths, who we are, and what we would do. This is why the Psalmist David cries out for God's help in dealing with himself"Search me O God, Let the meditations of my heart be acceptable to you. Renew in me a new heart". The "spiritual side" of us, although it is not perceivable by our senses and we cannot fully grasp it, is still never entirely out of our mind. It is always at the margin of our conscience, if not in the center of it.

Because we cannot fully grasp and understand our "spiritual depths" we need God's help. Every human heart and spirit longs for something. Spiritual formation is often misunderstood as entirely human matters. The thought is that we have a human dimension or power that, if managed correctly, will transform our life into a divine life, or at least deliver us from the chaos and brokenness of human existence. It is fortunate, but rare, there are those who are able to find a path of life that will form their spirit and "inner being" in a way that is truly strong and good and directed Godward.

Christian "spiritual formation" is focused entirely on Jesus Christ. Spiritual formation depends upon obedience and conformity to Jesus that arises out of an inner transformation accomplished through purposive interaction with the grace of God in Christ. Obedience is the outcome of Christian spiritual formation. Christian spiritual formation therefore involves more than human efforts and actions which are under our control. Well-informed human effort is certainly positive, but Christlikeness of the inner being is not a human attainment. It is a gift of grace.

The resources for spiritual formation extend far beyond the human. They come from the interactive presence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of those who place faith in God. They also come from the spiritual treasures; people, events, traditions, and teachings, which are stored in the body of Christ's people.

If we are the people of Christ we need to enter Christ's way of the heart. We then will find a sure path toward becoming the people we were meant to be; Godly people thoroughly purged of arrogance, insensitivity, and self-sufficiency. Spiritual formation, and renewal of the heart, is something we human beings can and must do continually. We must do it as individuals in fellowship with other Christians. If we truly keep our heart with all diligence, we will continually ask God as the Psalmist did, "Search our Hearts" daily. If we keep our heart in a continuous state of renewal we will be able to love others as Christ loved us and the world will definitely see Jesus in us.
