And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed. -- Mark 16:20 –

Notice that they -- Jesus’ disciples -- went out and preached everywhere, no boundaries. All the while, the Lord worked with them, as He said He would, being with us always until the end of the age. The Lord confirmed the Word by the signs that followed. They knew they were doing the Lord’s work because the Lord was with them. They not only felt His presence, they witnessed it. They prospered.

Mark's entire Gospel emphasizes Christ's power as well as his servanthood. I hear so much today from zealous Christians and from mission-oriented churches about “taking over the world.” I hear them say they are going to “change the world,” as if they are going to set up rule.

“What are we going today, Brain?”
“The same thing we do every night, Pinky. We’re going to take over the world.”

NARF! That's inevitably what Pinky would say, as if to state she (or it) was completely lost, confused. Running around pointlessly, feeling like she lacked in her purpose. Brain's self-centered, power-grasping attempts inevitably failed every episode, every night. Maybe it was because Brain chose to work at night, according to His own warped missions and desires, in the dark without the presence of the light.

Sorry for the momentary lapse into cartoon land, but such is the comedy to me of some enthusiastic vibes we send out when we lose focus and become self-absorbed and over zealous. Honestly, I don’t see any Pinky and the Brain in Jesus’ Gospel.

Jesus' life and teaching does turn the world upside down. The world sees power as a way to gain control over others. But Jesus, with all authority and power in heaven and earth, chose to serve others. He held children in his arms, healed the sick, washed the disciples' feet, and died for the sins of the world. Following Jesus means receiving this same power to serve. As believers, we are called to be servants of Christ. As Christ served, so we are to serve.

Lord, today and everyday, give us the strength, the power, the courage and the love to go out and preach your Word everywhere. Let us receive in our hearts your power to serve so that we can serve others and be about your work, demonstrating God’s love. I pray these things in your name, Jesus. Amen.

Romans 8:28
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to[ his] purpose.

Do you love God?

It is not a trick question. Please do not take the words for granted. Think about them for a few minutes. Transpose the thoughts that come into your mind with the honesty that is often fleeting and not always within your grasp.

In fact, stop. Be still! Be still and ask God to show you your heart, to let you see what He knows about you and who you are.

This is just you and Him now. No one but you and your Daddy. No pretense. No observers. No excuses. Nothing but you and everything.

Do you love God?

I like to think I love God, but I am not always patient; by nature I am very impatient.

I am not always kind, especially not to God. I sin quite a bit. That is not what God wants me to do.

I find myself jealous more often than I care to admit, jealous of God, too.

I often brag about things, usually on the inside, so as to build myself up because for some reason I think that's what I am supposed to do. Where does that come from? Unless I am careful, my tendency is to be arrogant and self-centered. The last place I would want to be is in my way. How sad is that?

I often react to and behave in ways that I am not proud of. What must God think of my behavior, I mean, if I can identify an unbecoming nature in me, what must He see in me? I have to admit that I am easily provoked, often when I least expect it. Not that deep in my subconscious I have a computerized scoreboard that stores digital photographs of people who do things to me that I think are wrong. There's also a video component in this scoreboard, a videotron, that my inner-coach uses to fire me up with edited playbacks as game day approaches. Game days occur in my mind often in places that are pitched to a frenzy and often filled with lewd and profane outbursts in the name of competition and justice.

Upon further review, the receiver originally ruled to have made the catch, namely me, actually bobbled the ball before stepping out of bounds. Therefore, the ruling of a completion on the field is overturned. What I thought was love, actually is not. The pass is incomplete. The ball is turned over on downs.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 defines love. It says: "Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails . . .

The Bible also tells us that God Is Love.

So, that means God is patient. God is kind. God is not jealous. God does not brag. God is not arrogant . . . if I want to live with the knowledge that Romans 8:28 is at work in my life -- that All Things are Working Together for Good in my Life -- I take this to mean I must choose to love God when everything that is in me, my nature, is working against that.

How is this possible?

How is it possible for us to actually love God, I mean according to His definition of love, which is God? We do not even really need instant replay to know that we are truthfully not capable of loving God.

We are doomed. Right?

Not so fast . . . (okay, I've been watching a lot of College Game Day on ESPN lately. That's my Lee Corso impression.) . . . The truth is All Things Work Together for Good for those who love God, who are called according to His Purpose. With God, all things are possible. God made it possible for us to love Him by giving us Himself, his only begotten Son. Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life. He loved God exactly the way God says we are to love Him. Jesus also loved us, enough to give His life for us.

We are not capable of loving God, not in and of ourselves. But if we will daily deny ourselves, pick up our crosses (bear our burdens and the burdens of others, as Christ did) and follow Him (you can't follow someone or something unless you are looking at it), then you will know Him. To know Him is to Love Him.

In Jesus, we can love God. Apart from Jesus, we can do nothing.

By TODD HORNE

By TODD HORNE

<blockquote
If then I have grace in your eyes, let me see your ways, so that I may have knowledge of you and be certain of your grace; and my prayer is that you will keep in mind that this nation is your people. (Exodus 33:13)

Moses is brutally honest with God here. In fact, honesty and bluntness with God was a characteristic trait of his personal relationship with the Almighty! I think we should have the same type of transparent and honest relationship with God through Christ because we are not only saved from ruin, but also because exercising this type of honesty requires nothing of us but trust. By having this trust in God, through Christ, we are entitled to everlasting happiness.

Observe in this verse how Moses pleads. Moses demonstrates for us that we find grace in God's sight, if we find grace in our hearts to guide and quicken us in the way of our duty. Moses -- it is very clear -- dreaded the thought of going forward without the Lord's presence. He wanted insurance, if you will, that God was and would be with him. Moses, by this season of his life, was very wise. None of us should move forward down any path without knowing that we are and will be in the presence of the Lord, that the Lord is with us. The only way to make sure God is with us, is to make sure we are following God. Staying in constant contact with God is the only way I know to make sure we don't lose sight of Him or become deaf to His word. God's gracious promises, and mercy towards us, should not only encourage our faith, but also excite our fervency in prayer.

Prayer is not about us asking God to make us happy and comfortable, as is so often the case with many people's prayers today. Prayer is about setting one's heart into a proper alignment with God's will. Your will, Father, not my own. We get so caught up in ourselves. It's as if we are always asking God to bless us -- our thoughts and our plans. You get the distinct impression if you look at how we people naturally think that God is actually following us and that our prayers are our attempts to have Him fall in line behind us, begging him to support us in our desires and objectives.

Of course, this is not how God works. Moses was wise because he understood that. Moses prays "to see (God's) ways" so that "he (Moses) can have knowledge" of God's ways and "be certain of His grace."

Moses' prayer was, very simply put, that he could know God deeply and intimately so that he could make sure that he could follow his Lord, knowing innately that wherever his Lord was, there, too, would be His grace, there too would be His mercy and there, too, he, Moses himself, would be.

This is the way we should live, seeking God and His way at all times in truth and in spirit.

"For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake.... So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you." - 2 Corinthians 4:11-12

The great mystery of the good news of Jesus Christ is that death gives life. Jesus - who in the beginning was the Word and was with God and was God - sacrificed his purely divine state to become a man. He created all things. All things were created in him, by him, and for him. Yet, He emptied himself of all that he was. We cannot even begin to fathom what Jesus gave up simply to step out of eternity into time -- to become one of us. Jesus, who was God, became a man to live a life on earth, to literally be with us, to physically walk with us, and to spiritually commune with us in the flesh, to teach us and to show us exactly how to live. Jesus lived so that he could die. For us.

Jesus' death on the cross gave life. The death of a seed gives new life. God's requirement for experiencing Him is death. When Jesus invites us to be saved from our sins and to accept him as Lord, it comes at a great cost to us. Jesus is asking us to give up our very lives. What we do not realize until we totally relinquish our lives, giving ourselves wholly and completely over to God, submitting everything that we are to him, is that we are not really living at all. Without this death we will continue to strive, manipulate, and fret over every detail of life. Only when we finally come to the end of ourselves and are able to say, "Yes, Lord, I am Yours completely," will we experience real freedom for the first time. Then, and only then, is Christ fully manifested in and through our lives. Then, and only then, can other people look at you and see Christ.

Christ describes our lives as vessels - vessels for Him to be revealed in and seen by others.

How is your vessel? When people look at you, do they see a life that is dead to all things except the life of Christ revealed? Every day we face challenges that seek to plant seeds of doubt, of fear and control in our vessels. If we do not follow Jesus' example and die to ourselves, as the apostle Paul said, die to ourselves daily, then other people cannot see Christ in us. This is our only purpose in life. Christ wants to live through us and reach other people through us. He can only do this if our vessel is free of ourselves. Ask Jesus what things must die today in order for Him to live completely in and through you. He will show you . . . Then, and only then!

. . . the source of joy available to us comes from our relationship with Jesus, but the question asked is when does this joy appear?

By Stephen Stillman

The New Testament makes it very plain that our source of joy comes from a relationship with Jesus.

Jesus Himself spoke of two ways that we might find joy in Him. He said, “if you obey my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commandments and remain in His love. I have told you this so that My joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete”. The 2nd thing Jesus said was, “Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, ,and your joy will be made complete”.

These two statements verify that the source of joy available to us comes from our relationship with Jesus, but the question asked is when does this joy appear?

To answer this question we can look in the book of Philippians and see how the apostle Paul experienced joy even when he was confined in jail, a time which would be for most people a time where joy would seem impossible.

Joy appeared when Paul prayed for others, Philippians 1:4. “always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy”. When Paul took his eyes off his own circumstances and focused on the Philippians, he experienced joy. What a lesson for us today. 1st we need to quit looking and worrying about ourselves and asking God for our own needs, and begin thinking about our friends and asking God to help them in their needs. Lifting up others in prayer is certainly an experience of joy.

Joy appeared when Paul saw God’s plan being fulfilled, Philippians 1:18. “What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice”. Paul rejoiced while in jail knowing the Gospel was being preached. Even though he was out of service, so to speak, Paul didn’t lose his joy over others taking his place. He experienced Joy because the Gospel was going forth. This is another great example to follow, especially for ministers of the Gospel who sometimes become overcome with jealousy when others are getting noticed for their preaching. We should be joyful that the Gospel is still being preached today no matter who is taking the message of the gospel forth.

Joy appeared when Paul saw others living lives pleasing to God, Philippians 2:2. “Fulfill ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, (being) of one accord, of one mind”. This directly ties to the 1st thing Jesus said mentioned above that provides us a source of joy, that we obey His commandments. Loving God and loving each other is the great New Testament commandment. To obey this commandment will find ourselves like-minded, in one accord, of one mind, and having the same love one for another. This most certainly will be pleasing to God and will provide us a rich source of joy today.

Joy appeared when Paul knew he was pleasing God. Philippians 2:17-18. “Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all, for the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me” . Paul’s goal in life was to please God in everything. He sought to please God in all of his trials such as this time in his life being imprisoned. Knowing he was in God’s will brought him joy. What another great lesson for us today. Sometimes we seek to stay in favor with God just enough to stay comfortable. When we do so we rob ourselves of an abundance of joy that comes from striving hard each day to do God’s will.

Joy appeared when Paul focused on the Lord Jesus Christ, Philippians 3:1, “Finally, my brethern, rejoice in the Lord”. Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord alway; (and) again I say, rejoice”. Paul encouraged others to do what he did: rejoice in the Lord! Paul did not manufacture joy, but he chose to find joy in worshiping Christ. Paul had already experienced and proven to himself that joy would be the result of staying focused on pleasing Christ.

Joy appeared when Paul remembered the limitations of his human abilities, Philippians 3:3, “For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh”. Paul had no confidence in his flesh, that is, he did not look to himself or his circumstances as a permanent source of joy. Paul knew that Jesus and his relationship with Him was the only source sufficient to bring him joy.

If Christians do one thing that short circuit joy in their lives, it is confusing pleasure and joy. Both have a place in our lives. There are many things God has created for us to enjoy and bring us pleasure, but the thing about pleasure is that it is temporary and has a different source than joy. If you try to make life’s pleasures the source of your joy, as soon as those pleasures have run their course or taken away, your joy disappears. Pleasure is temporary but joy endures. Indeed true joy has it’s source in God and His faithfulness, which is new every morning. (Lamentations 3:23).

As we go on we make other discoveries about joy. We see that it is produced in us by the Holy Spirit, and is a fruit of His presence, (Galatians 5:22). Joy is not linked with material possessions, but is rather an overflow of salvation, (Acts 8:8; 16:34). It is true that even pagans can find pleasure in the good things God has given to all human beings so liberally. But the Christian knows a heightened joy; a joy that is rooted in the bond that exists between believers who have come to love each other. The deeper our relationship with Jesus and with His people, the greater the joy that awaits us, and the less that joy is dependent on external circumstances.

How often do you experience the true joy of knowing Jesus?

Our home is our world. Everything we are is reflected there: our integrity, our vulgarity, the nature of our weakness, the nature of our strength. Do we have the courage to leave the door open so that Jesus can come in with us? Do we dare ask Him to be near us during those moments of intimate relationships when we say things the world must never know or hear? Would we wish Jesus to follow our thoughts no matter where they might lead? Would we want Jesus to follow our hopes and dreams no matter what they encircle

By Stephen Sillman

Christians are told how important it is to continually follow Jesus. We are to follow Him constantly and consistently. We are to follow Him closely enough that others will see Jesus in us. It takes courage to follow Him. When we hear Jesus say to those who were scattered along the hillside, “Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all maner of evil against you falsely, for my sake,” we know that it took courage. When we read that as they followed Him they were afraid, we know that it took courage. Those of us who walk with Him know the courage it takes when some fear grabs at our heart. We know the courage it takes when we sense how far the road with Him can lead. We know the courage it takes when we sense how high the Christian adventure can lift us. We know the courage it takes when we sense how much acceptance and how much surrender it may mean.

There is an incident in the New Testament which turns our thinking completely around. It is full of human compassion which sooner or later touches all of us. A father full of grief had come to Jesus to tell about the death of his child. After telling Jesus, the father went straight to his house. Jesus followed. We don’t need someone to explain the deeper meaning of this drama. What happened so long ago has happened to every one of us. There have been times when we have poured out our hearts, said all there is to say, then went our way. Then we sensed we were not alone. Jesus followed. The soul knows it’s crisis, when our world falls apart and all certainty seems to disappear. There are no words in these moments. Our prayers are stifled. Fortunate is the man or woman who know in that hour they need not walk alone. After all, Christianity is a faith for crisis. It does not matter whether it is a crisis of joy or a crisis of sorrow.

Let us ask ourselves some questions that reach deep into us.

I. Have we the courage to ask Jesus to follow us to the place where we live?

Our home is our world. Everything we are is reflected there: our integrity, our vulgarity, the nature of our weakness, the nature of our strength. Do we have the courage to leave the door open so that Jesus can come in with us? Do we dare ask Him to be near us during those moments of intimate relationships when we say things the world must never know or hear? Would we wish Jesus to follow our thoughts no matter where they might lead? Would we want Jesus to follow our hopes and dreams no matter what they encircle?

II. Have we the courage to ask Jesus to follow us to the moment in which we are tested?

There are times when we are like a man sinking in the quicksand. We do not want to yield to our weakness, be we feel ourselves alone and helpless. We find ourselves in the grip of something that is not of ourselves. There are times our heart is divided and our mind is unclear. In that moment we may see the old standards of our parents by which we were raised grow hazy. We begin to rationalize and justify our actions. We seek to persuade ourselves we have found a better wisdom and a new morality. We live as though there is no future. If only then we could remember there is a tomorrow and tomorrow will be full of loneliness and remorse.

There are other times of testing when we must follow our course. There are times when we must stand against our own kind, when we must set ourselves against our own families and follow a voice that cannot be silenced. We cannot turn a deaf ear to that voice or turn from that sense of duty in ourselves. There is only one road and we must walk down that road. But there is that other voice whispering of the price we shall have to pay, and of the cross we shall have to bear. If in that moment we waiver, we will never be ourselves, and we will never build a better world.

III. Have we the courage to ask Jesus to follow us to the place of our fears?

There are those bitter days when our minds are torn by conflicts. We are afraid and our fear dominates everything we do. We do not trust ourselves for fear we will fail. We do not trust our friends for we are persuaded they cannot help us. Our souls are truly sick. Panic sets in and we run from psychiatrist to psychiatrist seeking relief. Do we then have the courage to ask Jesus to follow us to the place of our need?

What is it we do when our heart is troubled? We ask ourselves questions, but there are no answers. We find our hopes and dreams have been carried away. We look for fulfillment, but there is never any end. We grow bitter about life. But it might have been different if we had asked Jesus to follow us. How many answers would we have found, how many dreams might have become reality, and how much fulfillment we might have seen if we had asked Jesus to follow us? What could our faith had done, with what assurance could we have met our difficulties, and with what dignity could we bear our troubles, if only we had the courage to ask Jesus to follow us?

Yes, it takes courage to follow Jesus, but it takes more courage to ask Him to follow us. The road before us may be long, we may need to travel through the dark, we may be afraid. Then we hear footsteps. We look behind us and see the shadow of Jesus following after us. It is then that we know all will be well for He will be with us whenever and wherever our need is.
