John 16:8 And when He [the Spirit] comes, He will convict the
world concerning sin and concerning righteousness and
concerning judgment: (9) Concerning sin, because they do not
believe into Me;
Rom 5:12 Therefore just as through one man [Adam] sin entered
into the world, and through sin, death; and thus death passed
on to all men because all have sinned.

Sin is related to Adam, the first man God made for Himself, for it was through
Adam that sin entered the human race.

We were born of sin in Adam. If you were born in Adam, you were born a sinner.

In fact, we have been sinners for six thousand years. Although,
as a man, you might be only 30 years of age, as a
sinner, you are 6,000 years old. There are no young
sinners. Every sinner is very old, as old as Adam.

We are not sinners because we sin. We sin because we were born sinners.

The sin we are referring to here is the unwillingness to be translated from
Adam into Christ. If people wish to remain in Adam, it means
that they want to remain in the old realm and not move into
the new realm, which is Christ… You do not need to rob a
bank, deceive your wife, or lie to your parents. You may
be a gentleman, but as long as you do not believe in the Lord
Jesus, you are destined to perish. The unique way to escape
from your sinful situation is to believe in the Lord, and the
unique sin that qualifies you for perishing is not to believe
in Him.

Therefore, the key today is whether we believe or
not. If we believe, we shall be translated out of Adam into
Christ. But if we do not believe that Jesus is the Christ, the only begotten Son of the Living God, we shall perish.

-TH

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. (Romans 1:18-21)

Our Universe was built to be a window into another realm. Most men spend their entire lives seeing only the surface of things. They stare at the window, but never through it.

Only those who stare through the window—who see the brush strokes of the artist in the landscape; who hear the original conductor behind all beautiful melodies; who sense the intervening provision in ordinary circumstances—are fit to be called “worshipers”. All other worship is merely pretense and religion. The “music” may sound lovely, the words may be sincere, the emotions may be roused, but the soul is untouched and the heart is unmoved. It’s Cain’s offering of duty and conscience not Abel’s offering of heaven-piercing faith. The one sees Him who is invisible and reaches through the limits of space and time into heaven to see and find and know Him for themselves. The other knows about God in his “mind” and seeks to do right “things” for Him.

If you are never filled with unexplainable awe, if your heart never skips a beat, if the hair never raises on the back of your neck, if you’re never inspired to love or to dare or to risk…in bizarre ways and times and places, then you’ve not seen the one whose image is stamped indelibly on our Universe and whose image, though tainted, continues to emerge forth—even among the fallen sons of Adam.

This then, is a different sort of look at Him who fills everything in every way. This is a look at Jesus and a call to open our eyes and see Him. The attributes of His nature are built into the structural code of our universe. He is a Warrior, a King, a Poet, a Prophet, a Brother, an Artist, a Groom to be, and a Best Friend.

Though all of His roles have been twisted and counterfeited by the enemy (this is the enemy’s primary way of keeping the masses from falling madly in love with Him, and inspiring them to storm the castle and expel the usurper ), His irresistible nature shines through for those who have eyes to see and hearts full of ignitable tinder…

Because He is a Warrior…

Your heart leaps when courage confronts injustice face to face

Your pulse races in the hunt

Your anger burns fiercely against oppression

The drums of war call you—summoning you to arms

You are filled with elation when evil is defeated, when mercy triumphs, and when hatred is deposed

You find inspiration in simple contests, when athletes compete and give their all

You unconsciously cheer for the underdog

Because He is an Artist…

The simple beauty of a fiery sunset or a flowery meadow charms your soul

Mountains compel you to climb, overwhelming you with their towering grandeur

The snowy night calls to you, inviting you to join in winters games;

to sled, to throw snowballs, to take a sleigh ride

The crisp air of winter invigorates you

The leaves of autumn take your breath away, a brilliant reminder of the coming change

The ocean’s pulse awakens you calling you to distant horizons

Migrating geese fill the bright blue sky, begging you to follow to lands unknown

A mighty waterfall staggers you, a torrent of power and fury

The fresh morning scent of the forest renews you, reminding you of places

you’ve never been before

Because He is a Carpenter…

A hard days work brings a strange but deep satisfaction to your soul

Fine craftsmanship is its own reward and is pleasing to behold

Men are unknowingly drawn to build and to create

Sweat feels good and proper and right

An honest days work deserves a fitting wage

Because He is engaged…

Mighty men put down their swords and stoop to picking flowers

Maidens hearts flutter and are melted

Love poems are written, car doors are opened, and kind words are spoken

Hearts are carved in trees and sidewalks

Fine linen dresses are made

Dancing was invented

The ark was loaded two by two

Adam felt alone

A wedding is the climax of history

Because He is a King…

White horses were born, purple robes were fashioned and majestic thrones were assembled

Trumpets blare and sound so regal

Red carpet, curtseys, & bowing stir our dormant nobility

Men remove their hats as gestures of respect

And children’s eyes dance at stories of Kings and Queens and castles

While the words “Your Majesty” whisper to us of a world yet to come

Because He is a Best Friend…

Everybody wants one

Weddings have a “best man” and Maids of Honor

Brotherhood is revered and Sisterhood is cherished

Loyalty sustains the heart and is fiercely guarded

Confidants are coveted

Men feel compelled to become “blood brothers”

Because He is a Judge…

Skeletons love closets & the treacherous crave darkness

Blame is so prone to shifting

Guilt exists

And hardened pagans pray in airplane turbulence

Because He is a Father…

Holding newborns makes time standstill

Playing catch came into existence

Laps were made to practice sitting on

Because He is a Poet & Musician…

Demonic men are calmed when harps are played

Melodies ring in our minds for years holding the strongest place in our memories

evoking dormant emotions and bringing a tear to our eye

Our hearts are stirred by noble verse and feet tap unconsciously to the beat

Because He is a Scientist

Wonder Exists and nature is filled with fascinating discoveries

We are intrigued by the tiniest atom and the most distant reaches of the Universe

The activities of ants and bees speak to our souls of order and industry

Children ask “why” questions

E=MC2

Because He is a Redeemer…

Forgiveness exists in our universe

Seventy times seven isn’t a math problem

And mountains of guilt can disappear—chasing the east to the west

Men and women are inexplicably moved to forfeit their lives for loved ones and strangers

And “I’m sorry” and “I forgive you” hold a sacred place in every culture

And best of all, Your sins can be forgiven

Her spirit shined!

If you knew my sister, Missy, you knew she loved you. That’s simply who she was and what she was about — love.

If you did not know her, you’ve probably got a sister, a brother, a cousin or a friend. So, you know what it means to feel love. Turns out Missy loved a bunch — more than we, her family, even knew. Such was the gift of a gracious and mighty God. In our grief, God showed and shared with us a multitude of stories about Missy that helped us know and understand who she was, how special she was and, most importantly of all, that the fruit of her life was love. Scripture tells us that God is love and the fruit of the Spirit is love. She knew and accepted Jesus, and her faith bore ample and abundant fruit. Absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, and Missy’s faith was not without works and never died.

It happens. It really happens. . . But we never think it can happen to us. Or worse. Those we love.

On July 20, 2010 at the tender age of 38, Missy suffered a pulmonary embolism at my parent’s home. Without warning, without any signal at all, and without any foreknowledge of previous illness, Missy fell ill and died. In an instant, she was gone. It happens. It really happens.

For almost 24 hours — until the coroner’s report came back — we had no idea why Missy died. We were, as my Uncle Terry said, thunderstruck.

My Dad cursed himself and life itself. He spewed anger at God in much the same way that I imagine Job’s wife urged him to do in the oldest book of the Bible when all that he held dear was helplessly stripped from him. A child, his baby, his only girl, died in his arms. He could do nothing to save her. Dad fought with Missy’s blood clots unwittingly yet frantically as they passed through her lungs trying to use the breath from his own lungs to save his little girl. He gave everything he had for her and to her in those final moments. But she passed anyway.

The ambulance arrived and after an hour or so the angels on the ground pronounced her dead. My brother Chad noticed that the paramedics were angels on the ground and that the same compassion and care they exuded in the physical realm is also carried out by heavenly teams of angels in the spirit world every day as people pass through the shadows of death. Mom didn’t want to leave Missy’s lifeless body alone. She said in a grief-bellowing cry over and over again how much she wanted to cover Missy with love, not ready to say goodbye. Never ready to say goodbye.

My wife and daughter were staying with my parents on vacation when Missy collapsed. I was 1,900 miles away, rounding a curve on a Southern California highway in a supercharged Chevy Cobalt contending with life and absorbing some heavy blows when my cell phone rang.

Missy never married. But she loved Kipp and they had their life together for years. Missy loved her dogs; they were her kids. She was so happy here!

I had not seen Missy in five years. I was too busy wheedling life and living through all my excuses. I kept putting off seeing people I loved. I took them for granted. I was sure they would wait, could wait another day, another week.

On Valentine’s Day 2009 — a full year and five months before Missy died — she wrote the following as an answer to a personal quiz on Facebook: “17. WHO DO YOU MISS THE MOST? My Brother Todd and his family, wish i could see them more than I do…P.s. thanks Todd for inviting me on facebook.
On the phone about a week before, my little sister and I talked. Cat Stevens, I believe it is, has always haunted me with his song ‘But We’ll Have A Good Time, Then.’ That song will forever remind me of this moment now, until I breathe my last breath. Missy’s last words to me — the last thing she ever said to me — was, and I quote, “Todd, it’s time to come home. It’s been too long. ”

There is so much more to this story, so much more to the chapters of Missy’s life. Her entire story bears reflection because through it are lessons that can strengthen other people’s lives. Missy was a humble, a gentle and a loving soul. She was profound and utterly simple. In these ways, Missy personified and glorified Christ. She could also aggravate you with her hard-headed, set-in-her ways determination and with her stubbornness. Conformity could not claim Missy as an ally. She not only heard a different beat, her drum sticks were manufactured elsewhere.

Fitting in and drawing attention to herself simply did not matter to Missy. She genuinely cared about other people more than she cared for herself. Her servant’s heart baffled us at times. And, we would encourage her to bow up and not be so weak. Thankfully, she rarely if ever listened to our “advice.” She knew better than we did. She really did.

The only person whose attention ever really mattered to Missy was Mom. Missy always wanted Mom to notice her. Missy always wanted Dad to approve of her. As for Chad and I, we were boys. We were different. A different breed. She loved us. But she did not want us singing her song. Not ever. (More on this later.)

Complex in her simplicity and profound, Missy had a Heart full of Love. More than 300 people celebrated her life and shared love stories of her at her service on July 23, 2010. We will never know another Melissa so Sweet.

Dad did approve of Missy, and he fought for her with everything he had. Mom’s eyes — and her heart — always have and always will belong to Missy. Physical death can’t trump that for Jesus has overcome death. Praise Him to no end!

Chad and Missy were always so close growing up. Less than two years separate them. Though their adult lives did take different paths, they remained close. Always living within a few miles of one another, they saw each other and spoke often. Chad and his wife Kara have three boys and Missy is their Mimi, and the boys all miss her greatly because she was woven into the fabric of their lives. I will never let them forget Missy. Neither will Chad or Kara.

My daughter, Avery, will never forget her Mimi, either. She will always remember Missy and her beautiful smile. She last saw Mimi’s smile as she lay on her bed only minutes from her death — though no one knew that then. Avery handed Missy a soda. Missy smiled and thanked her, calling Avery a sweety. Missy loved Avery and was so proud of her. Missy always said Avery was so beautiful, and looked just like she did. The truth is I can’t begin to tell you how many times throughout her young life Avery did things that reminded me of Missy when she was a little girl. Did I ever tell Missy that? It would have made Missy so, so happy.

One time Missy called me up early one morning. It had been a long time since we had talked. I said hello and she immediately asked if I could get her boyfriend, Kipp, a supercharger for his Mustang. She knew I owned automotive magazines and web sites and that I worked with parts manufacturers on a daily basis. It stood to reason, I could get her one for Kipp, she explained. It would make Kipp so happy. . .

“Missy, you don’t understand. They cost a lot of money, thousands of dollars. I can’t just get you a supercharger! It’s more complicated than you’re making it,” I said.

“Is it really?” Missy asked.

Yes, really, I said. What do you think? Don’t you understand the ways of the world, Missy?

“He wanted one. I wanted to get him one. I thought you could help me. It’s simple, Todd. I understand. Don’t worry about it,” she said in a very detached way.

I admit that single conversation confounded me for years. I would often use it as a marker showing how different Missy and I approached life and things. In my mind, I was right and she was wrong. Things had to be more complicated, more complex, or I wasn’t happy. There had to be some “do” involved. But for Missy, complications disrupted living — living which meant giving. And I always thought I had to teach this type of stuff to Missy. Imagine that! I should have listened more. I should have fallen on our face and thanked God for the gifts He was giving that I was failing to see and comprehend. Don’t do this to yourself? Please, don’t do this.

Five years of not seeing Missy turned into a lifetime in an instant for me. How do I live with that? Only with, by and in the strength and courage of the mighty and all-knowing Father who is capable of taking “all things” and making them “work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28). Without this knowledge, without this faith, without this promise from a God who never, ever fails, I would not be able to carry on. But with it, oh my strength and courage is renewed and my guilt and remorse sown asunder. For I know — I know — that God will prevail, and that one day Missy and I will stand together in front of a triumphant speaking creator, hopefully arm in arm, as He demonstrates to us how he used our lives individually in this time of pain to call and speak to other’s hearts, unlocking in their minds and in their spirits that deeply seeded knowledge that He is. Through this pain and suffering, through these ashes, He will transform it into a beauty unimaginable. Then, and it will come, in it all pain will be avenged and all distance and sorrow requited. Glory be. And use me now, oh God.

Not only did Missy in our last conversation get the final words in, rich in their profundity upon review for me as always, but I never was able to tell her how much I noticed her, how much I approved of her, and how much I loved her. We should, but we rarely think of those things. So, for now, I wrote her a little note.

But, please, do yourself a favor, talk to those you love right now and tell them exactly what it is you want to say. Say it with love. Speak straight from the heart. Talk to them after praying, after asking God to reveal to you the things you are blind to. We all have so many blind spots — and it is most often we cannot see because we are wearing blindfolds.

Missy,

I never thought this would happen, never thought it could be. You’re home, and you made it there before me.

It was not supposed to be this way, or so I say. But as you always said to me, “Todd, you don’t know it all! It doesn’t matter how many big words you use or throw at me.” Well, you were right, Missy. You were so right! So right about that and so many other things, too.

And now I see.

I see that Big words were my crutch. In my heart, while I always wanted to share with you what I knew because I thought it could help you in some way or another, I was also really always unsure. I not only was unsure of what to say, but how to say it. I fancied myself as a writer. I was, you’d say. Just not as good as you could be. But you knew and you saw right through what I really was and where I wanted to be. And you knew that to get where I really wanted to be I had to learn how to be me. I marvel now at how you did that. I marvel also at how blind I was then not to see what you, your words and your life were demonstrating to me.

You knew a writer does not rely on big words, “Tell me in English,” you would say, time and time again. “What good does it do you to say something if no one knows what it means. If I have to carry around a thesarus to have a conversation with you, why would I want to talk to you?” It’s almost like you were saying writers don’t pontificate, they communicate. People don’t talk at one another, they talk with one another. And brothers, well, they don’t talk like that, not ever. Instead, they should bathe their words in love. Then, the words will flow, always hitting their mark.

You were right about so much. So wise in so many ways.

I’ll always feel your spirit and recall how when you were here it beamed through your eyes, how you cracked that lovely smile all the time; producing a beauty so noticeable and so uniquely your own. Meanwhile, your wisdom was so profound and so reserved . . . Mom and Dad, Chad and I, we love you so much — so so much!

Oh, Happy Day, Happy Day! When You Wipe Our Tears Away.

Never will another day pass in my life where I will not think of you — your warm, endearing and infectious smile, your loving heart and your oh so beautiful spirit. Nor will another drop of blood pump through my heart where I won’t be driven to love another person, to love all others that I see, in an understanding and contrite way.

This is what you, my sweet little baby sister, have taught me.

You were, and will always be, our Missy. For now and forever in eternity. I cannot wait until that day, that glorious day, when I will be able to hug you in my arms again.

I love you, Missy! I love you!

Editor’s Note: I actually wrote this last month, two days before my world shook and my foundations were rocked by the sudden and unexpected death of my 38-year-old sister, Missy. It’s amazing to me how the Lord counsels, prepares and cares for our hearts, souls and spirits in our time of need, even when we do not know we need it. Especially, when we do not know we need it. He is a loving Father!

We have but one purpose in life. That’s right, only one.

It does not matter your age, your gender, your race, your nationality, your creed or your lack of creed — we were all created to do one thing. Everything else that we do lacks meaning unless it is directed in some way towards the object of fulfilling this purpose.

If this sounds like a rigid, restrictive and intolerant existence, then you’re not looking at it right! If that sounds ignorant, close-minded and bigoted, then you’re not feeling the love and the spirit of the message. It it makes you want to recoil and argue, then, take it from me: I fought it for years. Open up your heart and your mind and listen for a second.

There is so much to hold us back from worshipping and serving the Lord.

We could so easily become discouraged. We need the encouragement of God’s Word. This is what we have here: ‘With God we shall gain the victory, and He will trample down our enemies’. At times, it may seem like our enemies have the upper hand. When we feel like this, we must remember the Lord – He is ‘a strong tower against the enemy’(61:3). When things seem to be getting out of control, we must fix our eyes on the Lord Jesus Christ – He is ‘enthroned for ever’(61:7). ‘Day after day’, He calls us to worship Him and to live as His servants. He calls us to receive ‘His mercy… new every morning’, to be ‘renewed day by day’(61:8; Lamentations 3:22-23; 2 Corinthians 4:16-18).

Simplify your life, they say.

Yeah, right!

I have found that simplicity in life is not a work that I can perform; it’s not a feat that I can pull off.

Simplicity may be part discipline, but it is all grace and also mercy amplified.

In short, simplicity is a gift from God. A simpler life is action stemming from thoughts placed in the hands of a loving Father. It is absolute, authentic and it cannot be earned, postured, or posed.

Simplicity in life requires but one thing of you, over and over again. Daily, in fact. That one thing is trust. Trust unmitigated, unrelenting and unyielding.

Without the spirit of trust we would find it exceedingly difficult – actually impossible – to live on the basis of prayer for daily bread. No, we would need an adequate stash somewhere, just in case – and be assured that what we now have is never adequate.

Paul counseled Christians to live free from anxiety. That, of course, is more easily said than done. Everything in our training and in our culture combats a carefree spirit of unconcern. How can we be free from anxiety? What resource is available to us? Paul perceived the resource to be prayer: “Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Phil. 4-6). Prayer frees us from anxiety because it teaches us trust. The result is peace: “And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4-7).

Trust, prayer and simplicity are intertwined.

“Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13b-14

Os Hillman points out that our past can be a hindrance or a help in moving toward God’s purposes for each of us.

For some, the past has meant pain and heartache, and grace is required so that we do not let our past dictate our responses to the future, Hillman says. Pastor John Piper calls this Future Grace, and he has written a book about it by that name. I highly recommend it. God has only good planned for us, but if we allow our past to make us a victim, then we have not entered into the grace that God has for us. If we live on memories of past successes and fail to raise our vision for new things, we again are victims of our past.

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland” (Is. 43:19).

Hillman says our past should only be viewed for what we can learn from it, pointing out that wherever we are and whatever we are going through or coming out of we must move forward and avoid viewing the negative or the positive for more than what we can learn.

Many have allowed their past to dictate their future, according to Hillman.

But the Bible is very clear: God is always about doing new things in our lives. He gives fresh revelation of His purposes in our lives, if we will only open ourselves up to receive it.

Do not live in the past. Do not hold onto bitterness that may hinder God from doing new and exciting things in your life. He turns our wastelands into streams of water to give life, not death.

How have you viewed your past? Has it hindered you in some areas of your life? Have you relied on past successes to dictate what you will do in the future? Put aside such thoughts and allow God to do a new thing in your life. Ask Him to help you see the new things He wants to do in and through you today.

“When your memories are bigger than your dreams, you’re headed for the grave” [Author unknown].

By TODD HORNE

<blockquote
If then I have grace in your eyes, let me see your ways, so that I may have knowledge of you and be certain of your grace; and my prayer is that you will keep in mind that this nation is your people. (Exodus 33:13)

Moses is brutally honest with God here. In fact, honesty and bluntness with God was a characteristic trait of his personal relationship with the Almighty! I think we should have the same type of transparent and honest relationship with God through Christ because we are not only saved from ruin, but also because exercising this type of honesty requires nothing of us but trust. By having this trust in God, through Christ, we are entitled to everlasting happiness.

Observe in this verse how Moses pleads. Moses demonstrates for us that we find grace in God’s sight, if we find grace in our hearts to guide and quicken us in the way of our duty. Moses — it is very clear — dreaded the thought of going forward without the Lord’s presence. He wanted insurance, if you will, that God was and would be with him. Moses, by this season of his life, was very wise. None of us should move forward down any path without knowing that we are and will be in the presence of the Lord, that the Lord is with us. The only way to make sure God is with us, is to make sure we are following God. Staying in constant contact with God is the only way I know to make sure we don’t lose sight of Him or become deaf to His word. God’s gracious promises, and mercy towards us, should not only encourage our faith, but also excite our fervency in prayer.

Prayer is not about us asking God to make us happy and comfortable, as is so often the case with many people’s prayers today. Prayer is about setting one’s heart into a proper alignment with God’s will. Your will, Father, not my own. We get so caught up in ourselves. It’s as if we are always asking God to bless us — our thoughts and our plans. You get the distinct impression if you look at how we people naturally think that God is actually following us and that our prayers are our attempts to have Him fall in line behind us, begging him to support us in our desires and objectives.

Of course, this is not how God works. Moses was wise because he understood that. Moses prays “to see (God’s) ways” so that “he (Moses) can have knowledge” of God’s ways and “be certain of His grace.”

Moses’ prayer was, very simply put, that he could know God deeply and intimately so that he could make sure that he could follow his Lord, knowing innately that wherever his Lord was, there, too, would be His grace, there too would be His mercy and there, too, he, Moses himself, would be.

This is the way we should live, seeking God and His way at all times in truth and in spirit.
